Program Description:

Within the Aspen Institute is a program called the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE). An international network of organizations called ANDE encourages entrepreneurship in developing nations. Small and growing companies (SGBs) are the target of key financial, educational, and business support services provided by ANDE members because they believe SGBs will boost employment, long-term economic growth, and social and environmental benefits.

In the end, we think SGBs can contribute to a nation’s economic recovery. Since its founding in 2009 with just 34 members, ANDE has grown to approximately 240 members who together conduct business in more than 150 nations. The ANDE team comprises eight regional offices spread around Asia, Latin America, and Sub-Saharan Africa, in addition to its headquarters in Washington, DC.

Your Role

Southern Africa chapter is looking for a Projects Intern, based in our Johannesburg office or remote.

The fundamental duties of the position of Projects Intern involve a wide range of obligations focused on process orientation and painstaking attention to detail. This versatile position necessitates a sharp ability to show resourcefulness, maneuver obstacles with ease, and stay proactive with a range of ongoing initiatives.

Working closely with multiple cultures, the Projects Intern is expected to demonstrate outstanding interpersonal skills and collaborate within the chapter and global environment. The ability to write well, communicate well, and use the Microsoft Office Suite are all essential components of the position. It is also required of the intern to be flexible so that they may move between different projects and jobs with ease.

The Projects Intern will play a crucial role in building a strong entrepreneurial ecosystem in Southern Africa as a vital team member, which will promote long-term, sustainable economic growth.

The period of this sponsored internship is November 2023–April 2024. The monthly salary is ZAR9,000, and 40 hours of labor are expected of you (Monday to Friday).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Day to day work involves supporting ANDE’s local Chapter’s team with research, project implementation, administrative, communications (social media, chapter update and newsletter), database, and event projects.
  • Running event logistics (virtual and in-person) including setting up the event page, recommending appropriate venues, webinar support on zoom and Microsoft teams, marketing the event, sourcing and managing suppliers, registering attendees and updating campaigns.
  • Updating information in our local chapter database, communicating with members to confirm data, knowledge sharing of research reports to our members and supporting all staff with a variety of administrative needs.
  • Writing and proofreading blog posts, reviewing and compiling newsletters and chapter updates.
  • Assisting with social media posting on LinkedIn and Twitter.
  • Researching potential member opportunities, staying up to date on various topic areas of interest to ANDE members, i.e. gender equity, environmental action, job creation, etc

Knowledge, Education, and Experience:

  • An undergraduate, graduate student or recent graduate wanting to learn about entrepreneurship in emerging markets
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and remotely
  • Adaptable – able to support multiple ongoing projects and pivot to new tasks quickly
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Microsoft Office Suite proficiency
  • Experience managing databases (Salesforce experience preferable)
  • Graphic design and communication skills (preferable)
