About Umfolozi Sugar Mill

USM is a leading producer of high-quality VHP brown sugar, which is sold in the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) and to various cross-border regional markets.

Situated in the heart of Zululand, 25 kms from St Lucia, the surrounding area of Mtubatuba is a vibrant farming community. We support our local small scale can growers and the rest of our cane is grown on the Umfolozi Flats. We currently employ a total of 350 people, mainly form the local community.

USM is committed to sustainability and is awake to opportunities to expand its production of renewable electricity, bio-ethanol, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as market opportunities arise. Currently, USM generates renewable electricity which is exported onto the national electricity grid and sold to third-party customers.

USM is situated in a deeply rural, poverty-stricken district of KwaZulu-Natal.

USM’s success and the employment opportunities it provides, both direct and indirect, are integral to the well-being of the greater Umkhanyakude District Municipality.

The iconic Umfolozi Mill has been a presence in the heart of Zululand, between the world heritage Isimangaliso Wetlands Park on the Kwazulu Natal North Coast and the Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve since it began operations in 1913.

Over the past 100 years, it has undergone changes of ownership, shareholding and operational names, but we are always moving forward to welcome new technologies and industry changes, recognising that embracing innovation and keeping up-to-date with world-class developments, results in continuous improvement in our systems and performance and the success of all our people.

The present Umfolozi Mill had its origins back in 1913 when a concession was granted to the St Lucia Sugar Company to mill sugar cane. This cooperative of sugar cane growers built the first mill in 1916. After severe floods, the mill was re-sited to higher ground in 1925, where it is presently situated.
